Over the past year, the Donaghpatrick Kilcoona Heritage Society have been working tirelessly to bring together their latest project of Townland Mapping. Townland Mapping is a project spearheaded by the Galway County Heritage Office which aims to bring together all the information available on any given townland and present it in an easily accessible format online.
Members have been working to bring to life all townlands in Caherlistrane/Kilcoona – painstakingly compiling information from sources such as census reports, land valuations, ordnance surveys and tithe applotments.
There are currently three townlands online, which can be accessed via the following links:
Abbeytown (Baile na Mainistreach) – Galway County Heritage Office
Ballinduff (Baile An Duibh) – GalwayCounty Heritage Office
Ballintleva (Baile an tSléibhe) – Galway County Heritage Office
The society’s aim is to upload one or two townlands per week in alphabetical order and they are asking the public for their help. If you have old photographs, anecdotes, stories or field names that might be suitable to include with each townland the society would love to hear from you and can be reached via email donaghpatrickkilcoonahs@gmail.com. You can also follow their progress on their Donaghpatrick-Kilcoona Heritage Society | Caherlistrane | Facebook and DonaghpatrickKilcoona Heritage (@dkheritage) • Instagram photos and videos pages.
