Here’s a selection of dancehall ads from local newspapers the 1970s.
In the days before Facebook and Instagram, before mobile phones and multichannel TV, the highlight of the week for many young people was a trip to one of the many famous dance halls that provided entertainment for 46 weeks of the year. (Dancing during Lent was forbidden by the church, so all the bands went to England for the duration.)
Seaport in Salthill, The Sound of Music in Glenamaddy, The Crystal Ballroom in Kiltormer, The Temperance Hall in Loughrea – these venues drew huge crowds every weekend during the Ballroom boom of the Sixties and Seventies. Big Tom, Joe Dolan, Dickie Rock and dozens of others were household names before anyone had heard of Spotify and YouTube.
